You'd be surprised at how many kids are opting for the new, healthier school lunch choice at Clinton Park Elementary School.
"Milk, and salad, and fruit," says kindergartner Tyler Calvin, describing his lunch.
Beginning this week, children at each Clinton school can choose a traditional lunch or a "grab n go". It's offered as a convenient alternative for parents who pack their kids sack lunches, but you'll never find potato chips or candy bars in the "grab n go" meals.
Students will find different selections on different days.
"Ham and cheese sandwich, turkey and cheese sandwich, salads that we're offering, and a wrap," says Child Nutrition Director Regina Ducksworth.
On Thursday, the day we visited the school, the "grab n go" selection included ham, cheese, wheat crackers, fruit, raw vegetables, a cookie, and milk.
The Merchant Company food service delivers the meals, and cafeteria workers assemble them. Clinton Park Elementary had 200 "grab n go" meals prepared one day this week, and had to prepare more due to high demand.
We asked kindergartner Lars West if he was enjoying his "grab n go" lunch. "Yes," he replied.
The alternative lunches cost $2.25, the same as the other school lunches, and they are available for children on the free and reduced lunch plan.
