Wet ground blamed for downed tree

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Last week's heavy rains have left behind a very saturated ground, bringing down some trees in the metro area.

A large pine tree fell across Kings Highway just before two Saturday afternoon.

Residents said they heard a loud boom, lost electricity then went outside to see sparks flying around the downed power lines.

They also blame high winds for the downed tree.

According to meteorologists, it doesn't take very strong winds or a thunderstorm to bring down trees when the ground is this wet.

No one was injured.

"I'm very concerned because that tree was rotted at the bottom and it had been leaning for a while and it just fell. And we have about two or three other trees that are also rotted like this one up the whole side, and its leaning directly over our house. And if someone was driving down the street while that happened or if it would have fallen the opposite way on someone's house then it could have been a lot worse," said Kings Highway resident Cyley Wright.

Power has been restored.
