JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The overnight snow is going to cause a continuous problem with a slushy mix on bridges and roads Thursday morning. This is especially true along the I-20 exits. Side streets and state highways are likely to have some patches of freezing early, so be careful.

The snow is expected to change over to rain by mid morning, and then we'll have to contend with the elevated river levels, particularly the Pearl, Big Black and Yazoo rivers. Highs will climb to the upper 40s and winds north 5-10 mph.

For Thursday night, the rain and all precipitation comes to a complete stop, even clouds will begin to thin. Temperatures are expected to drop well below freezing, into the upper 20s. Winds will mainly push from the north 5-10mph.

Friday brings a very crisp and cold start to the day, but without the threat of snow or freezing rain. We'll see mostly sunny skies as high pressure takes over our weather pattern, and temperatures climb back to the norm for this time of the year. Some bridges may have a little left over moisture that may be frozen over, so still proceed with caution on the roads and exits in the early morning hours.

The City of Jackson geared up Wednesday for the potential of ice. The city said it's prepared to spread sand and de-icer on city streets and bridges. Public works crews are also on standby to address any needs.

Drivers in Yazoo City said they were taking every precaution necessary. Many of them planned to fill up on gas and groceries before the sun set.

"Matter of fact, I'm going home right now due to the fact that they called us in early. The safest thing to do is go home," said Charles George whose employer called everyone in early Monday.

Other drivers explained their strategy when around potentially icy bridges.

"They can fool ya. You know, you don't hit them like it was dry. So, I watch that really close," said Marlon Davis.
