Ovary removal linked to memory loss

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

New research suggests women who must go into early menopause for health reasons may experience faster memory declines.

The study included 1,800 older women at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

Those who had to have their ovaries removed appeared to have more difficulty with memory that relates to time, places and overall thinking abilities.

The effect was greater the earlier women had the surgery.

However, women on longer-term hormone replacement therapy had slower declines.

Researchers say this apparent protective effect warrants more study.

There was no association between memory loss and natural menopause.

This study is from researchers at Harvard Medical School and is being presented at the American Academy of Neurology's annual meeting.
