Delta counties deal with ice

Posted: Updated:
HUMPHREYS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Counties in the Delta had to deal with freezing rain for the second day in a row Tuesday.

The conditions were just right near the Humphreys-Sunflower county line to cause the steady rain to freeze to anything it touched.  The ice became too much for pine and cedar trees to bear. Limbs snapped under the extra weight.

Power lines in the area were also coated in a half inch of ice as more freezing rain fell, putting more stress on the power grid, and increasing the possibility of outages, although few were reported.

Roadways were wet, but thankfully for motorists, not icy. That goes for bridges too, where MDOT crews sat on standby, ready with gravel and sand, just in case the rain turned to sleet.

The icy conditions led to schools being released early two days in a row.

Residents are hoping mother nature puts a freeze on the current weather trends.
