Community reacts to Greg Davis' announcement

(WMC-TV) - Southaven Mayor Greg Davis said that deciding not to seek re-election was one of the toughest decisions of his life.

"After careful consideration and prayer, along with discussions with my partner and family, I feel the time has come for me not to seek reelection and allow the voters to choose who will lead them over the next four years," said Mayor Greg Davis in an exclusive interview with Action News 5 Wednesday.

Until Mayor Greg Davis made the announcement, the citizens of Southaven expected him to run again. Now that they know that is not the case, they are reacting.

Southaven mayor Greg Davis made that announcement exclusively to me Wednesday night. Over the past few months Davis told me he would seek reelection but with his legal troubles...a contentious divorce and announcing he is gay he decided he needs to make a change.

"We're excited that he has made that choice not to run for 2013," said Linda Temple, head of Citizens for Southaven.

Temple wanted to make it clear that she believes Davis has done a good job over the past 16 years.

"He has done a lot of good for our city, with all due respect," she said.

But even though she likes him, she thinks it is time for a chance.

"There comes a time when the best interests of the city and myself and my family, my daughters more particularly, has to come into play," said Davis.

Davis said that just because he is not running again for mayor, does not mean he will not work hard to promote the projects he believes are important to Southaven.
