Medical professionals offer free heart screenings

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson area hospitals united to tackle heart disease and offer residents free health screenings.

The Mississippi Trademart was transformed into a giant medical facility Saturday for the fourth annual "Heart Beats of Jackson" event.

The Jackson Heart Foundation and the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership gathered doctors and medical professionals from Baptist, C.M.M.C, St. Dominic's and University Medical Center to offer examinations.

The expensive cardiovascular tests and procedures are performed free of charge.

They checked blood pressure and cholesterol and screened for diabetes and heart related illnesses.

"We need to be able to help screen folks to find out whether they have problems or not. We want to make sure that if they have problems they have a way to have an assistance to focus on those problems that's what we're trying to do today," said cardiologist Dr. Clay Hays with the Jackson Heart Clinic.

Patients were referred to doctors, given follow up information, as well as on site counseling.
