JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A Hinds County leader is calling for an end to violence after a shooting near Saturday's Martin Luther King Parade.
Hinds County Supervisor Kenneth Stokes says King's message of non-violence should remain the focus of celebrations for the slain civil rights icon.
Standing at Freedom Corner Sunday afternoon, Stokes said residents and parade organizers should not shy away from King's legacy.
As for the future of MLK parades, Stokes says churches must become involved.
"The message has to be stop the violence. You got to have a campaign of stopping the violence. You know it could've been a tragedy I'm saying that this young man could be dead today and it's a blessing from God he's alive. So the message got to be stop the violence," said Kenneth Stokes, Hinds County District 5 Supervisor.
Stokes hopes a reward can be offered to help find the shooter.
