A high school principal who has lived through a school shooting says he doesn't support arming school administrators.
Bill Bond was principal at Heath High School in Paducah, Ky., in December 1997, when a male student opened fire into a student prayer group in the lobby, killing three girls and wounding five others. It happened in the morning before classes started. Bond says he regrets not being in the hallway already when students were entering the building.
Bond addressed high school principals at Millsaps College Wednesday morning. He says if he had been armed that morning, he probably would have been shot by the gunman, 14-year-old student Michael Carneal, who was shooting everything that made a quick movement.
"I'm very much against arming administrators. And I understand. I have a concealed carry permit," Bond said. "You know, I had to take a gun away from a kid, and he had a 10-shot clip. I believe if he had a 30-shot clip, I wouldn't have been able to do it."
Bond says Carneal came to school that day with five guns and 1,060 rounds of ammunition. Carneal ended up surrendering to Bond in the hallway. He's currently serving life in prison.
