JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
New research reveals colon cancer patients should get up and get active.
That's because data from the American Cancer Society have linked too much sitting with an increased risk of dying from the disease.
A study of over 2,000 colon cancer patients found those who spent six or more hours a day sitting were 36% more likely to die than those who sat less than three hours a day.
Regular exercise lowered the risk of dying by 28%.
Researchers still aren't sure why but say long periods of sitting have negative effects on glucose and insulin levels and can worsen hormone balances.
This study was led by researchers at the American Cancer Society and published in the 'Journal of Clinical Oncology'
