JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A town hall meeting in Jackson Wednesday night focused on youth safety. Students and law enforcement met at the Jackson Medical Mall to talk about their concerns.
The Milton S. Eisenhower Foundation is working with the medical mall foundation to restart a Youth Safe Haven Police Mini-station. The after school program involves mentoring and community service.
Part of the meeting involved students discussing safety concerns in their neighborhoods with the Hinds County Sheriff's Department.
"Public intoxication and also a lot of drug dealing [is an issue]. It's affecting me because I'm raising my daughter in the neighborhood, and I don't want her outside seeing it. I don't want her around it, and it's just becoming a big problem for me," said 18-year-old Brittney Hicks.
Law enforcement asked participants for more parental involvement in fighting crime, while residents took the opportunity to point out problems in their neighborhoods.
"The solution is what we're doing here today. There's been a disconnect for so long, and we've all been working on the same problems. This gives us an opportunity to bring everybody to the table, to bring it full circle to where we all have been trying to work on police, the community and all the neighborhood," said Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis.
