BROOKHAVEN, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A Lincoln County sheriff's deputy was shot Friday evening while on patrol.
Sheriff Steve Rushing says Deputy Byron Catchings was driving down Union Street in Brookhaven about 8 p.m. when someone shot the door of his patrol car.
The bullet went through the door of the car, hitting Catchings in the lower back. He was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center Friday night. Catchings was released from the hospital early Saturday morning.
Rushing says Mario Black, 28, of Brookhaven is being charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
Rushing says Black and other individuals were at a house on Union Street when an altercation broke out and Black fired a gun.
At the same time, Catchings was driving by in an unmarked patrol car.
Rushing says investigators are trying to determine if the shooting was intentional or an accident.
