JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson officially announced the kick-off to his re-election campaign. The mayor was surrounded by numerous supporters Saturday morning at Fondren Plaza.

Mayor Johnson said if he's re-elected, some of his key goals include continuing to improve Jackson's infrastructure and retaining talented young professionals.

To make Jackson more of a destination city, Mayor Johnson said he would also like to see a hotel built at the Jackson Convention Complex.

The Mayor also said he's been in communication with Wal-Mart officials about Sam's Club leaving Jackson and heading to Madison. Mayor Johnson said ideas are already circulating about what business could replace the Jackson Sam's Club.

"Clearly we also need to look at a replacement for this type of membership based discount store, we've been in touch with one since 2010 and so maybe this will create some opportunity, quite frankly for us to continue those discussions and get another big box like that back into Jackson," said Mayor Johnson.

Several other competitors plan to run against Mayor Johnson. The election is May 7th.
