Capital City Hamfest wraps up two day event

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

They are often unseen, but their voices can reach around the globe and be vital in times of emergency.

They are ham radio operators.

Capital City Hamfest 2013 wrapped up Saturday afternoon at the Mississippi Trademart.

The two day event is a gathering of amateur radio operators from Mississippi and surrounding states.

The Trademart was filled with ham operators mingling and finding the latest equipment.

Attendees came from as far away as Virginia.

The radio operators work with law enforcement and the weather service in times of natural disasters and emergencies when other communications systems are not working.

It was also an opportunity for ham operators to become licensed.

"We have all types of radios, all types of frequencies. We also gave tests this morning for all three grades, and we had out of 13 we had 11 pass. So we consider this a successful Hamfest," said Capital City Hamfest Chairman Gary Young.

An estimated 1,300 people attended.

Capital City Hamfest is sponsored by the Jackson Amateur Radio Club.
