MS health care professionals:New strategies for treating heart disease

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi health care professionals are creating new strategies to treat heart disease patients.

A conference was held at UMC Saturday, to discuss a universal treatment for stroke patients.

The goal now is to become the first state in the country to have strict guidelines in place when medical professionals start treating stroke patients.

Currently, Mississippi is only the second state in the nation to have a state-wide protocol in place to treat heart attack patients.

"We implemented that so whatever ER they go to, it's the same treatment every time and it's the right treatment. And so, that's what these protocols are taking the standard of care and putting it even in the smallest ER's we have in Mississippi," said  Harper Stone, President of Mississippi Healthcare Alliance.

Mississippi has one of the highest rates of cardiovascular disease in the country.
