JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The Pepsi-Co Company is removing a controversial food additive from certain flavors of their Gatorade sports drink.
The change comes after numerous consumer complaints about brominated vegetable oil which is banned in most European countries and Japan but not in the United States.
Studies on rats suggest the chemical can build up in fatty tissues and cause reproductive and behavioral problems.
B-V-O, which is only used in citrus flavors of Gatorade, will be replaced with another type of additive and the new formula will be available within the next few months.
