JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

One special Jackson Public Schools teacher received an unexpected surprise Thursday morning.

Jim Hill High School students packed the school's auditorium for a special assembly. That's where JPS Superintendent Dr. Cedrick Gray announced the district's Teacher of the Year. The honor went to Jim Hill English teacher Tracee Thompson.

Thompson was presented with flowers and the sounds of the Jim Hill High School marching band. Thompson said she's been teaching nine years and has known since she was a child that teaching was her passion.

Thompson will now compete with teachers from across the state for Mississippi Teacher of the Year.
