CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Clinton police officers spent much of Friday afternoon loading biting and snapping pit bulls into crates. Eight dogs in all were confiscated from their home in a thicket of pine trees. Two dog carcasses were also found nearby.

"The condition these dogs were living in was horrible. They were tied to 4' foot chains and pretty much having to fight to stay alive every day of their life," said Detective Josh Frazier. "It's just horrible conditions for animals to be in."

Officers, working off a tip, discovered the dogs in a wooded area of Northside Drive Friday afternoon. The eight pit bulls were found tied up with heavy chains.  Officers believe the animals were part of a dog fighting operation.

Detectives say the dogs are all between 6 months old and 4 years old. Officers also found syringes on the scene that they believe were used to inject the dogs with antibiotics and steroids.

The dogs have been placed in the custody of the Mississippi Animal Rescue League.

Police are now looking for the owners. No arrests have been made in the case, but those responsible could face a felony charge for each of the 10 dogs.
