Renovations proposed for Coliseum, Trade Mart

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

While the facilities at the Mississippi Fairgrounds are adequate, we've learned new plans are on the table to make them even more attractive for large events.

Renovations are being proposed to transform the Coliseum and eventually the Trade Mart. The facilities are outdated in numerous ways, said Agriculture Commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith Friday morning.

Proposals will be submitted to the legislature and an economic impact study is underway.

"We've actually contracted with a group called Populous through the architectural firm. They designed the arenas in London for the Olympics and are coming in. They are looking at the entire campus and they are giving us information that we need and proposals to go to the legislature," Hyde-Smith said.

Meanwhile, the state fairground area is turning into a RV city with campers and livestock trailers setting up for the Dixie National Rodeo -- the largest east of the Mississippi River. Horses are being worked out and cattle are getting groomed for the competition, which brings $20 million in sales and tax revenues to Jackson.
