"Mississippi's Super Tax Day" helps residents find tax credit

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The United Way and Entergy team up to help residents find a tax credit and possibly a larger refund.

100 people took advantage of the free service at Metro Center Mall on Saturday, some waited more than an hour.

The "Mississippi's Super Tax Day" is for residents whose household earned less than $50,000.

Residents who qualify for an earned income tax credit this year could receive a $3,000 credit.

The United Way says the service is needed because the event continues to grow, attendance nearly doubled this year.

"Last year (at other events also) we filed about 2,700 returns and put $4.9 million back into this community, in terms of refunds and credits, and that money typically stays here and helps grow our economy," recalled United Way Director of Marketing and Communications Mandy Scott.

The Foundation for the Mid South estimates 600,000 Mississippians qualify for the earned income tax credit but some fail to claim it.
