JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It was a close race in Tuesday's District 28 state senate special run-off election, but there is now a new senator to fill the late State Sen. Alice Harden's seat.

According to unofficial election results released Tuesday night, 2,455 voters turned out to the polls. Jackson resident Sollie Norwood came out on top with 54.4% of the vote or 1,335 votes. Norwood beat out former Jackson City Councilman Marshand Crisler by just more than 200 votes.

Norwood has lived in the district for 42 years and is a Jackson State University graduate. He has worked in education at JSU and served as a division director with the Mississippi Department of Human Services.

Norwood will finish the remaining three years of Harden's term. The longtime lawmaker died in December.
