Hinds Co. E911 funds set to run dry

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Hinds County Supervisors will discuss the E911 system during a meeting Monday morning.

Hinds County District 4 Supervisor Phil Fisher says the problem at the forefront is that funding for the system will run out sooner than originally thought. Fisher says the county's communications system will be looked at during the meeting.

"Today we're going to be talking about the funding. There is an issue with the funding for the E911 system; originally we thought it was going to go broke in March of 2014, now we found out it is going to go broke in September of 2013," explains Fisher.

He says this is a problem that could affect Hinds County residents when they make 911 calls. Fisher says he hopes to present an in depth look at the communication system and present what problems exist.

"This E911 system is significant because this is what funds the radios, the computers; it funds the salary in the county, and that person is the one who puts the addresses in the system so that when you dial 911, the vehicle goes to the right place," justifies Fisher.

In Monday's meeting, Fisher says he hopes that he, and the other county supervisors, will leave with a better idea of how the money for the system has been used and what can be done to maintain the emergency system.
