State Representative Joe Gardner has died

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

State Representative Joe Gardner of Batesville died over the weekend. The chairman of the House Ethics committee had served in the Mississippi Legislature since 2007.

Dr. Gardner, 68, was an Associate Pastor of Macedonia M. B. Church, Chaplain at Tri Lakes Hospital and a Vietnam veteran.

House Speaker Philip Gunn says he was shocked and saddened by Gardner's death. Republican Gunn says Gardner "was a fine man who was well-liked by everyone."

Gardner is the second House member to die in the past month. Democratic Rep. David Gibbs of West Point died Jan. 13.
