MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Jackson State University isn't getting the cold shoulder from everyone in Madison county.
Monday supervisors rolled out the welcome mat for the university's expansion north of the Capital City.
J.S.U's plan for expansion in the City of Madison was met with opposition by Mayor Mary Hawkins-Bulter and another university.
Madison County District Four Supervisor Karl Banks introduced the resolution supporting J.S.U.'s move to the county.
The board unanimously passed the measure five to zero.
Banks presented the resolution to university president Dr. Carolyn Meyers who thanked the board.
Jackson State plans to lease building space in the City of Madison for a satellite campus.
Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler and Tulane University officials wrote a letter to the state Institution of Higher Learning asking the board to reconsider what they call a "premature approval" of the lease.
Dr. Meyers said she had not spoken with the mayor but encourages her to look on the positive side.
"I am a positive person and this country was built on choices and options. So we're another option, another choice for people to consider who have dreams that education can enable," said Meyers.
"Mayor Hawkins says that it's about business, but it's not her business. She has no right whatsoever to be telling Jackson State that they can't rent a piece of property from a gentleman whose one of Madison county's largest taxpayers," said Banks.
J.S.U. currently has three satellite campuses and plans to open another in downtown Jackson this summer.
reached out to Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler for comment on the resolution, but she was not available to speak with us or do an interview.
