NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

An organization that has helped Nashville's minorities reach new heights is celebrating a major milestone Tuesday.

The Urban League of Middle Tennessee marked 45 years of serving the city during its annual Day of Opportunity Luncheon.

This year's message focused on growing the workforce for the global economy.

The League also honored the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as the League was created the same year King was assassinated in 1968.

"This year is a significant year in many ways. We are 150 years since the Emancipation Proclamation," said President and CEO Patricia Stokes.

About 375 people attended the event, and Channel 4 News anchor Tom Randles served as master of ceremonies.
