Drivers need to watch out for the latest traffic snag along Fortification Street. A small portion of Jefferson Street, just south of Fortification Street, is blocked for the next three to four weeks.
Jackson city officials said the area is off limits so that contractors can connect the new Fortification Street water line to the existing water line on Jefferson Street. Workers are also installing a 24 inch water valve and removing Yazoo clay and replacing it with better soil.
Many drivers are avoiding Fortification Street because of the construction, but Virgi Lindsay, the Executive Director for the Greater Foundation of Belhaven said she hopes consumers will make a sacrifice because small businesses are struggling.
"You know, a lot of people tell me 'Virgi I'm avoiding the area' and I always say to them 'please don't, please remember that we have small business owners on this street who need your support'," Lindsay explains.
Lindsay said some businesses along the construction route have reported as much as a 25% drop in revenue. A construction detour is set up for traffic.
