RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Ridgeland police officers responded to a 911 call around midnight Thursday morning after a caller reported a hostage situation was escalating at a trailer park.
Supposedly, a man was in a residence at the trailer park on Pine Trial Drive with a gun, according to the caller. The alleged gunman's mother and sister were reportedly hiding in the trailer.
Ridgeland Police Chief Jimmy Houston says when officers arrived, however, they did not discover a man in a trailer firing off shots. Rather, units report the man's mother was at the residence when they arrived and explained that nothing dangerous had happened.
Officers looked for the son at the trailer, and discovered he was at his girlfriend's apartment.
Houston said while this is the first time an incident like this has happened in Ridgeland, he is seeing more and more scams like this happen nationwide.
"We are currently contacting the Hearing Impaired Service that made the 911 call last night that started the whole thing. Hopefully, from them they can give us a caller identification number where the phone numbers came from," Houston said.
Chief Houston said the culprit could face many charges including hefty fines or even time behind bars.
He said his team is finding out the incident could have happened when one of the victim's XBox 360 system, which is connected to the internet, was hacked.
If you have any information on this case, you are asked to call the Ridgeland Police Department.
