Child advocates examine school discipline policies

Posted: Updated:

Each year at least 3 million children are suspended from schools around the nation, according to Marian Wright Edelman, the Founder and President of the Children's Defense Fund.

Edelman is in Mississippi to talk about school discipline policies. Edelman says the current system is sentencing children to social and economic death.

"They're getting younger and younger and schools are criminalizing children at younger and younger ages. I don't understand what a 4-year-old, or a 5-year-old, or a 6-year-old could be doing that could result in their being expelled from school," Edelman said. "And the majority of the expulsions and the suspensions are for non-violent offenses."

Edelman will participate in a news conference Friday morning at the State Department of Education to discuss discipline policies in Mississippi school districts.
