Gun at Clinton elementary school brought from home

CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Clinton Police confirm the boy caught with a gun at Eastside Elementary School in Clinton last week brought the weapon from home.

Clinton Public School District officials say a student at Eastside Elementary school brought a gun on campus Friday.

School district spokesperson Sandi Beason said the gun was discovered when the student showed it to another child, who reported it to the school Friday afternoon. Police and the child's parents were then called to the school. No one was injured.

Beason didn't have specific information on what type of gun the student had or whether it was loaded.

Clinton Police revealed "the weapon would not have discharged if the trigger had been pulled." But officials did not voice whether the firearm was actually empty.

Eastside Elementary houses fourth and fifth graders. Certified police officers work on the school campuses in Clinton.

State law says any student with a gun, knife or other weapon on campus can be expelled. The student also has the right to appeal the expulsion. It's unclear if any charges will be filed. The juvenile justice system will make that determination.
