Health professionals discuss heart disease prevention

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi consistently ranks as one of the unhealthiest states in the nation.

Today health professionals are discussing ways to change that statistic.

"Mississippi Rising: A Preventive Health Symposium" brought doctors from across the state and nation to the Capital City to discuss cardiovascular disease.

Much of the talks focused on how to get patients to exercise on a regular basis, along with changing their diet and lifestyle.

Those economical measures can save your life and your money in the long run.

"Although we can do a lot, we're much better off preventing the illness to begin with. So, we want to concentrate our efforts. It's much more cost effective and beneficial for the patient and their long term outcome to actually prevent the disease," said President of the Mississippi Chapter of American College of Cardiology Dr. Michael Mansour.

Mississippi and Louisiana tied for the 49th healthiest state in the nation, according to a United Health Foundation study released in December.
