Strange smell stumps metro officials

Posted: Updated:
MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Residents and officials in the metro scratched their heads Monday about a strange odor in the air.

Fire officials in Madison were called to several businesses and homes on complaints of a natural gas smell. Monday afternoon, the doors of the Courthouse Gym on Highway 51 in Madison were held open, and guests evacuated for a short time while the fumes dissipated.

One resident said officials at the City of Madison told her the city received 40 calls from residents about the odor.

Madison County EOC Director Butch Hammack says the county hasn't been able to locate the cause of the smell.

Rankin County officials say they also received calls from residents complaining about the smell too.

Officials with natural gas supplier Atmos Energy said they've teamed up with another natural gas company, Centerpoint, to try to find the source, but neither company has any current gas leaks.
