North Nashville leaders wary of rapid transit plan

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A plan for new rapid transit buses in Nashville could leave some communities in the slow lane as leaders in north Nashville worry the city's improved mass transit is bypassing their neighborhood.

The plan calls for dedicated bus lanes that would stretch from White Bridge Road, along West End Avenue through downtown and end in the Five Points area in East Nashville.

However, critics say the route won't be of much use to people in north Nashville. Many of them don't have cars and count on the bus to get to work, and there are worries taxes or bus fares will go up across the city to pay for the project.

"These people would be disproportionately affected by that, and they still would not be able to benefit from the new routes and the quicker transportation that exists," said Metro Councilwoman Erica Gilmore.

The mayor's office hasn't announced the final route yet, and north Nashville leaders say they have been meeting with businesses and churches to get their input.

They are also looking for ways to bring other rapid transit options to the area.
