CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Getting to and from the Nissan plant in Canton should be a bit easier now thanks to a new bypass.

An official ribbon cutting ceremony took place Wednesday morning for the brand new Canton Bypass. The four-way road connects Highway 51 and Highway 43. The east-west roadway is expected to help alleviate traffic along Highway 16 and Highway 22, keeping heavy traffic out of downtown Canton. The bypass will also provide better access to the Nissan plant.

"This bypass accelerates us into the future it unclutters our square, it saves our streets, it makes our citizens safe, it protects our children from injuries downtown and it helps our taxpayers keep money in their pocket," said Canton Mayor Dr. William Truly, Jr.

The new bypass is officially open to traffic. It also includes a bike lanes on the outside shoulders of both lanes.
