HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Two convicted sex offenders were arrested by U.S. Marshals Tuesday night in Jackson for failing to register properly.

According to online booking records from the Hinds County inmate list, 43-year-old Sammie Lee Washington and 57-year-old George White were arrested and charged with one count each of failing to register as a sex offender.

U.S. Marshals spokesperson Rick Griffith explains the task force was brought in to aid the Hinds County Sheriff's Office in locating the two offenders.

"We're often called in to help state and local agencies to help locate and apprehend sex registry offenders," states Griffith. "As a fugitive task force, that's what we do."

Griffith says the U.S. Marshals office is dedicated to partnering with other law enforcement agencies and apprehending wanted offenders.

Washington was arrested in the 2100 block of Powers Avenue in Jackson, confirms Griffith. White was apprehended on Willow Court in Jackson.

The Mississippi Sex Offender Registry website reports that Washington was first charged with rape and assault with intent to ravish in May of 1987. White's records indicate he was charged in April of 1989 with rape and carnal knowledge of a child under 14 years of age.
