Student found with gun at Jackson middle school

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Hardy Middle School in west Jackson was placed on lockdown twice Wednesday.

According to JPS chief communications officer Darryl Anderson, sometime in the afternoon a gun was found in a student's backpack. The unloaded handgun was discovered in class.

JPS Campus Enforcement took the student into custody. He was transported to a juvenile detention center. Anderson said classes resumed and "school was back to business as usual" near the end of the school day.

The middle school was also under lockdown Wednesday morning while police searched for and eventually captured a bank robbery suspect in the area.

This is the second time in a week a metro-area student was found with a gun at school. Friday, an Eastside Elementary School student was found with a gun on the school's campus in Clinton.
