Point of View: Improving Reading

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

I read my first book in the third grade at French Elementary, so it's hard for me to understand that so many third graders cannot read at that grade level when they get close to the fourth grade.

Less than half of Mississippi third graders can, but if Senator Angela Hill from Picayune has her way, that may be about to change.

Her bill would require all third graders in the state to be proficient in that reading level before passing to the fourth grade.

The bill requires screening deficiencies to begin in kindergarten and parents notified when their child has serious reading issues. .

The senate has passed this bill which is now in the house. The house needs to pass this critical legislation.

It could be the best educational green light since the Education Reform Act in the 80's.

That's my Point of View.
