JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson family escaped their burning home Sunday morning, and fire investigators say the blaze was likely caused by a space heater.

Jackson fire fighters responded to a blaze around 7 a.m. at 3408 North Southland Drive. Chief Fire Investigator Greg Travis says heavy smoke and flames were rising from the home when units arrived.

According to Travis, a father and his two children were asleep in a bedroom when the fire started. A child woke up and alerted the family to the spreading flames.

A preliminary investigation has determined a space heater was too close to the bed and set it on fire. Fortunately, all eight people escaped from the burning house.

One of the residents said five adults and three children were in the house at the time of the fire.
