Railroad crossing named for accident victim

CRYSTAL SPRINGS, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

About 50 people gathered at a deadly Copiah County railroad crossing Monday for a special ceremony to honor a man who was killed there in October 2010.

The accident happened just north of Crystal Springs where Hartley Lane crosses the Canadian National Railroad. A new flashing light and signs have been placed at the crossing to warn motorists of the danger.

Alonzo Minter was hit by the northbound City of New Orleans train on a Sunday afternoon. His Chevrolet Tahoe burst into flames and he was thrown from the vehicle.

Alonzo Minter's brother, Daniel Minters, says the goal is to get crossing arms for the crossing.

"So this is progress. This crossing is a work in progress. We are not done with this crossing," Daniel Minters said.

Copiah County Sheriff Harold Jones says the new lights might save a life.
