Witnesses rescue 3 year old after parents die in wreck
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
A Brooklet, Georgia couple was killed and three people injured when a pickup truck crossed the median and rolled over into a car on Interstate 516 Friday afternoon.
Stephen Carroll Joyner and his wife Camie Barnes Joyner died at the scene of the 2:16 p.m. crash. Their daughter, 3 year old Dakota Joyner was listed in stable condition after being transported to Memorial University Medical Center for treatment of injuries she received in the crash.
"I've seen some horrific stuff in my life but this was bad. It was devastating," witness Randi Hempel said.
Hempel says she pulled up on the wreck with other witnesses before police arrived.
"There was also a nurse and we got to the car where the little girl was and people were already trying to help the parents in the front seat. A gentleman cut the car seat out of the backseat and we took the girl by the side of the road to get her away from the car because it was still smoking," Hempel said.
Hempel says the little girl was able to talk, but had broken glass in her face and hair. She says the three year old kept asking for her mom and dad.
"I just sort of changed the subject and started singing to her and asked her what her name was and if she had any dogs. I tried to keep her mind off what was going on," Hempel said.
Police say Trever Chase Cannon, 22, of Bloomingdale was driving the pickup truck involved and is listed in serious but stable condition.
"The truck lost control and crossed over the median before hitting the SUV," witness Lowell Reed said.
Irven Williams, a motorcyclist who laid his cycle down to avoid the overturning pickup truck, was treated at the hospital for injuries he received from the fall.
Major Accident Investigation Team officers from the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department said Cannon was driving eastbound at a high rate of speed and lost control of the blue 2002 Ford F-250 pickup.
The truck entered the median and overturned, rolling over the motorcycle and crashing into a westbound silver 2004 Toyota Rav 4 carrying the family.
