West Jackson church honors city leaders at Black Heritage celebration

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A west Jackson church remembered those who fought for Civil Rights and are making the future a brighter place to live.

Lynch Street CME Church hosted its first Black Heritage Celebration Sunday afternoon.

The men's choir performed while numerous other religious leaders spoke at the event.

The program recognized 13 black individuals who they believe have made positive contributions to the community, including Mayor Harvey Johnson and Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis.

Church leaders say it's important to have good role models for children to look up to.

"People have come from such a long way, and we take this opportunity to not only celebrate where we come from, but also to show and to demonstrate to our children the importance of pressing on, said the church's minister, Rev. Cutis L. West.

February is Black History Month.

The church plans to make the celebration an annual event.
