JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson police say a Greenwood woman who was shot in the head late Saturday night was attempting to buy a vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Jackson Police Officer Colendula Green said it happened around 10:45 Saturday night on County Line Road near Livingston Road.

According to investigators the 20-year-old victim and her unidentified 23-year-old boyfriend were following a vehicle to go purchase a car. The lead vehicle stopped and opened fire striking the woman.

"These subjects got out of their vehicle and began firing rounds at the victims vehicle. At that point the 20-year-old victim was shot in the head, but the 20-year-old female's friend was able to leave the scene and notified authorities," explained Green.

Police believe the shooters were in a Buick Regal, no year model or color has been released.

"I'm not sure if they were assisting them with the transaction or making the purchase with them. So we are still investigating that as well," said Green.

The unidentified woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle, is in critical condition at University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Police say no cash was taken during the attempted armed robbery and aggravated assault. No suspects have been identified.
