Mediterranean diet best for reducing heart disease

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A new study provides definitive proof that a Mediterranean diet can help prevent heart disease.

Spanish researchers tracked over 7-thousand adults who were at risk for heart attacks or stroke.

Participants who stuck to a Mediterranean diet along with extra-virgin olive oil or mixed nuts were 30-percent less likely to develop heart disease than those who consumed a traditional 'low fat' diet.

That's even more effective than many medications like statins which may also raise the risk of diabetes.

A Mediterranean diet is rich in fresh fruits and veggies, fish, nuts, olive oil and wine and steers clear of red meats and processed foods.

This study was led by researchers at Hospital Clinic of Barcelona and published in the 'New England Journal of Medicine.'
