The first wi-fi gateway will be on top of city hall and the other at the city park.
Broadband expansion made it's way to Pelahatchie in 2009. It was that move that got Puckett's wheels turning about wi-fi possibilities.
PUCKETT, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Puckett is the home to just 316 people. But unlike many rural areas in the state, they're about to upgrade their connections with town-wide wi-fi.
"Basically, [we] just read about it, found where I can get the grant, got the grant and now we're going to improve the quality of life for the people in Puckett and Puckett area," explained Mayor Russ Espiritu.
Espiritu worked for about a year on the grant from the Delta Regional Authority. Now they're giving the town $5,640.
"It doesn't cost the town anything. The grant covers the whole cost. We have two gateways that we're going to work with that we pay for now. Doesn't cost the town anything more than we're paying now," said Espiritu.
The first wi-fi gateway will be on top of city hall and the other at the city park.
Currently, the only free public wi-fi is at the library. But a wider wi-fi area will be welcomed with open arms and hands on phones and tablets.
"Having access to free wi-fi will help me so that I don't go over my data limit. I don't know how many people have plans like that, but I have a limit," said resident Chris Johnson.
Broadband expansion made it's way to Pelahatchie in 2009. It was that move that got Puckett's wheels turning about wi-fi possibilities.
"I was surprised to see a town the size of Pelahatchie get it. I guess I never really thought about it coming to Puckett, but I'm glad it did," said Johnson.
The contract bid has been approved and the Mayor expects the wi-fi will be up and running as soon as 30 days from now.
