COAHOMA COUNTY, MS -

(WMC-TV) - The body found Wednesday morning in Coahoma County is now confirmed to be that of Marco McMillian, 34. McMillian was a mayoral candidate in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Police began searching for McMillian after his car was involved in an accident that sent two people to the hospital.

His body was found about 10 to 15 miles west of Clarksdale at 9 a.m.

The Coahoma County Sheriff's Office said it does have a suspect in custody, but it will not confirm nor deny if it is the person who was driving McMillian's car when it crashed Tuesday.

The person driving McMillain's car was flown to Memphis, and at some point authorities received information that the mayoral candidate might be in danger, prompting the search.

Friends, family, and church members are stunned by his death.

"When you see potential in this young man and so much that he had to bring to Coahoma County, of course, you're going to ask, 'Why?'" said Gale Moore.

Moore says McMillian will still make a difference in Clarksdale, even though he is gone. He helped the RSVP Seniors Program get grant funding approved just two days before his death.

"The bad news started coming seemingly right after we knew we were going to be funded for this program," she said. "We're going to miss you [Marco McMillian], and we love you dearly."

McMillian's friends gathered Tuesday night for a candlelight vigil to pray for his safety.

"I had just talked to him Monday of last week," said friend Keomi Scott. "We were all here, we were all rooting for him in the election for mayor and it's really hard."

"He was bringing more here for us here in Clarksdale with our youth, and everybody knew him," Catchings said.

Two of McMillian's challengers for the mayor's race were also at the vigil to show their support.
