RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Pearl man has been sentenced to 30 years after he was found guilty of sexual battery and gratification of lust involving a 4-year-old girl.

Jeffrey Mitchum, 23, is required to served his sentence day-for-day without possibility of parole or early release.

"This is a very disturbing case that involved the abuse of a young child," said Madison and Rankin counties' District Attorney Michael Guest. "The jury found that this child had been sexually abused and the evidence clearly showed that the abuse was at the hands of Mitchum.  Mitchum deserves the long sentence imposed, and I believe this conviction and sentence will protect other children from future abuse."

On Oct. 3, 2011, the Pearl Police Department was called to a pediatric emergency room in reference to a 4-year-old female who was complaining of pain and a stomach ache.  When questioned, the girl told officials that Mitchum had sexually abused her.

The suspect denied any involvement, but DNA samples taken from the victim's home matched Mitchum's DNA.

Mitchum will be required to register as a sex offender when he is released from custody.
