Suspect charged in mayoral candidate's death

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – Police have a suspect in custody in connection with the killing of a North Mississippi mayoral candidate. Lawrence Reed has been formally charged in the murder of Marco McMillian.

It's possible that if it wasn't for Reed crashing McMillian's car into Chris Talley's truck, potential answers may have taken much longer.

"There's a killer off the street," Talley said. "I don't know if it was fate that I did it, I didn't mean to do it."

Talley somehow walked away from the crash, and remembers Reed being hurt, but conscious.

"I never really got a look at him," he said. "He was so mangled up in the back of that vehicle when I got a good look at him."

Talley remembers a deputy telling him that Reed admitted to the murder while on the scene.

"The other driver of the vehicle that hit me told a deputy on the scene that he had murdered somebody the night before and he had dumped the body beside a lake," Talley explained.

Wednesday morning, investigators found McMillian's body west of town near the levees. It wasn't by a lake, but the coroner says there was standing water around.

While Talley waits on more facts to surface, he's also counting his blessings.

"I had an angel riding with me," he said. "He got a killer off the street, and I'm safe and that's all that matters."

The Coahoma County Sheriff's office is refusing to release the reasons leading to Reed's charge. But we know McMillian's SUV is in custody at the sheriff's office, likely so investigators can see if there are clues to the murder inside the vehicle.

Reed was still hospitalized at the Med Thursday night. There's no word when he will be released or what he will plead to the murder charge.
