JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

High school basketball is expected to help pull in some big bucks to the Capital City. The annual Mississippi High School Activities Association's statewide tournament kicked off at the Coliseum Friday morning.

First to play in the eight-day competition were the Bogue Chitto Lady Bobcats and the H.W. Byers Lady Lions. The tournament brings in 48 teams from across the state. In addition to the players, thousands of family members and friends are expected to join them and spend more than $2 million in the Capital City.

"A great financial impact somewhere around $2.3 million when you have 40,000 to 50,000 citizens in this state coming to basketball games," said Don Hinton, the MHSAA's Executive Director.

Officials from the Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau said the tournament's projected economic impact is comparable to similar events that make it to Jackson.
