JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The characters of Dr. Seuss' books came alive Saturday at the Mississippi Children's Museum.

To wrap up "Read Across America" week the museum hosted its annual "Dr. Seuss' Silly Birthday Celebration."

Story book characters such as Cat In The Hat, along with Thing 1 and Thing 2 greeted kids.

There was even a green eggs and ham cooking demonstrations to learn about healthy food choices.

Story book time may have been the most popular activity.

Organizers say reading is important factor in a child's educational development.

"Because of the challenges Mississippi's children face. 50% of our third graders don't read at grade level, and the Mississippi Children's Museum is a state wide institution that celebrates literacy 12 months a year," explained Mississippi Children's Museum President Susan Garrard.

This is the third year the children's museum has hosted the birthday celebration.
