"Fossil Road Show" rolls into Jackson

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The past came alive at the 10th annual Fossil Road Show on Saturday in Jackson.

The Museum of Natural Science invited visitors to bring in their fossil discoveries to get expert opinions about the age and identity of the item.

Folks brought in pieces of petrified wood and even sharks teeth. Geologists and archaeologists were on hand to identify them.

Many of the items could be found driveways, yards, or creek beds. Experts say the state is uniquely suited to find pieces of history.

"Mississippi is endowed with some of the preserved fossil specimens from literally the past hundred million years all the way to the past ten thousand years. So, the days of the dinosaurs all the way until the last ice age can be found in various places all over Mississippi," explained Geologist James Starnes.

While there, families were also able to go through the museum's fossil collection or go on a "fossil dig" themselves.
