JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Volunteers in Mid-City Jackson braved chilling 30 degree temperatures to transform the look of the neighborhood.

The City of Jackson's Great American Cleanup kicked off with Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr., residents, churches and community organizations picking up trash and removing debris and limbs.

Working Together Mid-City and Keep Jackson Beautiful were at a cleanup on Wood Street Saturday morning. It was just one of the efforts taking place across the city.

"As you go out for your daily walk take a bag with you and if you pick up paper and trash up and down your block it will send a message out and people will se that you know ok they mean business and they're trying to do things," said Debra Brent with the Mid-City Neighborhood Association.

Volunteers were also from St. Luther Missionary Baptist Church and Mission First.

The City of Jackson is encouraging residents to host neighborhood cleanups from March through May.
